Virtual reality seems to be the next step in entertainment technology and after its applications in gaming and television, it is set to be tested for football. BT Sport, EE and LiveLike, a VR platform company have come together to broadcast the Arsenal-Chelsea match live for virtual reality devices. However, this project is far from ready for mass consumption and will only be available in four of the biggest EE stores in London – Westfield Stratford, Oxford Street, Marble Arch and Tottenham Court Road.
For the fortunate few who make it into those stores on Saturday, will get to watch the match as though they were right there in the stadium. Viewers have the option to watch the match from four different viewpoints like pitch-side or from the stands. The virtual reality device will allow viewers to get a 360-degree view of everything around them from wherever they are seated at the Emirates.

COO of BT Sports Jamie Hindhaugh said, “BT is delighted to be bringing fans even closer to the action. We hope fans enjoy experiencing all the highs and lows of a football match via Virtual Reality. Fans and viewers are at the heart of our coverage and this is a great opportunity to experience this innovative new technology live in four of EE’s top London stores."
This trial-run is set to provide the most realistic experience of watching a football match and seems almost historic. Come Saturday night, it won’t be just those 60,000 people who are watching the game within the stadium but many more who will be viewing it virtually from the stores in London.
There will be that many more people watching what promises to be a good old rivalry played out on the pitch. Both their meetings last season were contentious, rowdy and full of controversy keeping the referee on his toes all night. Arsenal will especially want to push for a victory as they lost on both occasions.
